MEC Willies Mchunu condemns killing of Mhlupheki and Lusiya Myeni

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has strongly condemned the killing of Mhlupheki Myeni and his wife Lusiya Myeni, who were found shot dead at their home on Sunday, 8 February 2015 at eManyiseni, eNgwavuma under the Jozini Municipality.

It is alleged that the shooting incident was linked to a past incident where community members had assaulted the couple, accusing them of performing witchcraft activities.

In that incident, they were taken to hospital for treatment. It is unclear at the moment as to whether the killings are connected to the witchcraft allegations that were made by the community members.

Two cases of murder have been opened and no arrests have been made. Police investigations are ongoing.

Today, 10 February 2015 Mchunu condemned this ruthless murder, saying that police would do everything to ensure that those responsible for the murders were brought to book.

“We are, indeed, sickened by incidents of this nature where lives are lost through allegations of witchcraft.

“We have continuously been urging community members not to take the law into their own hands but rather address their concerns and frustrations in a constructive manner.

“We are certain that the police will work around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators face the full might of the law,” said Mchunu. Mchunu also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

“We call upon all peace loving people to work with the police to ensure that those responsible for this are brought to book immediately,” said Mchunu.
