MEC Mchunu condemns the killing of a pupil after an educational tour

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has strongly condemned the killing of Lungile “Dema” Cele whose body was found at a neighbour’s garden in the early hours of Sunday morning (5 October 2014).

Cele (14), who was doing Grade 9 at iMashiyamahle High School, eNdwedwe, had been on a school educational tour to Durban and did not return home on the day of the tour.

It is alleged that she was first raped then killed because her body was found naked and her private part full of blood.

Mchunu today, (October 06, 2014) strongly condemned this incident, saying taking a life of such a young pupil was totally abhorrent and it reflected the lowest decline in morals of our society.

“I would like to urge the teachers and parents to also play a role in ensuring that our children are safe at all times.

“We want to assure the family and the community of eNdwedwe that our men and women in blue will work tirelessly to assure that those responsible are brought to book and face the full might of the law,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for the loss
of their beloved one and urged the community to observe restraint and work together with the police to ensu re that the perpetrators are brought to book.
