KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu calls for extra caution on the road

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has called for continued vigilance by road users as he responded to the weekend’s spate of road crashes and fatalities.

A total of 13 people lost their lives in the province in separate accidents. The accidents took place in areas including Mooi River, R618 (Bhuqini) and P552, (emaDanishini) in Zululand, R603 (Umbumbulu Road) near Almond, OThongathi Plaza on the N2, near Stanger, Lion Park and Shongweni Dam Road near Hillcrest.

MEC Mchunu has on behalf of government expressed his deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, saying these accidents are unacceptable and could have be avoided.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to these accidents. On behalf of the KwaZulu- Natal government, I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of thosewho lost their lives and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery. I am disturbed that many drivers still deliberately disrespect road traffic rules.

I therefore urge all road users to remain vigilant for the safety of all of us. We have reduced road fatalities by more than 33.6 percent in the last four years and that is why we must all recognise that the responsibility to save lives rests with all of us as road users,” said Mchunu.
