MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu extends his condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist who died of a heart attack while participating at the Amashova Durban Classic race this past weekend.
Georg Manke (50), the Manager of the Tala Private Game Reserve, is reported to have suffered a heart attack near the halfway point of the 106 km race. He was rushed to Hillcrest hospital where he died.
“As government we are saddened and shocked by this tragedy in what was a successful sporting event. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire cycling industry. Such a sudden loss is never easy. May his soul rest in peace. As the department we remain committed to supporting cyclists through races such as the Amashova and to promote safe cycling and road safety in general,” said Mchunu.
