KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mrs Weziwe Thusi, has come to the rescue of stranded blind people by offering them an alternative accommodation venue after they were evicted from their residential home.
The people were initially residing at Durban’s Clarendone Home, a building which has since been condemned. The people were then moved to an alternative venue while the Clarendone Home is undergoing renovations. However, their contract has since expired and they have to evacuate the venue.
MEC Thusi held a meeting with representatives of the blind community and KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society and senior departmental officials where it was agreed that the department would temporarily accommodate the members at its Ilovu Skills Training Centre, south of Durban, whilst their permanent residence (Clarendone Home) is undergoing renovations by the Department of Human Settlements.
At the weekend meeting it was also agreed that eThekwini Municipality would assist with transport to relocate the members.
MEC Thusi expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders involved in ensuring that the matter is resolved amicably.
“As a department we have an obligation to ensure that people with disabilities receive utmost care as they are part of those vulnerable in our society. We will be offering them all the support they require until this whole matter has been resolved,” said MEC Thusi.
