MEC Thusi mourns death of veteran actress Ruth ‘Mamgobhozi’ Cele

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Weziwe Thusi, has expressed shock at the passing away of veteran actress, Ruth “Mamgobhozi” Cele.

Cele, who was famously known as MaMgobhozi, after a character she portrayed in one popular television drama, passed away at a Durban hospital early today after a short illness. She featured in various popular television dramas, including Hlala Kwabafileyo, Suburban Bliss and many theatre productions.

MEC Thusi described Cele as one of the country’s treasures, who inspired a lot of young people.

“It is with a heavy heart that one receives the sad news on the passing away of Mama Ruth Cele. She was one of the country’s remarkable actresses of our times and inspired a lot of young people who wanted to pursue careers in the acting industry. She also used her skills and talent to assist government in communicating its messages to communities.  Her passing on leaves a big void in the arts industry and she will be sorely missed. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family members and friends of the Cele family. May her soul rest in peace,” said MEC Thusi.

MEC Thusi will this afternoon lead a delegation of artists and senior government officials to pay homage to the Cele family.
