MEC Sipho Hlomuka on passing of playwright Mbongeni Ngema

KwaZulu-Natal's Acting MEC for Sport, Arts, and Culture, Sipho Hlomuka, expressed profound sorrow this evening as he acknowledged the immense impact of the untimely passing of internationally-renowned playwright Mbongeni Ngema in a tragic car accident.

He said the South African and global entertainment scene, theatre, arts and culture have been dealt a heavy blow.

In his tribute, Hlomuka celebrated Ngema as an iconic figure—a larger-than-life personality known for his flamboyance, vibrancy, occasional controversy, and fearless expression of views. Describing Ngema as a powerhouse who lived life to the fullest, Hlomuka highlighted the multifaceted talents of the playwright, composer, musician, lyricist, actor, and businessman, expressing deep regret at the magnitude of the loss.

The Stimela saseZola hitmaker's acclaimed works, including the award-winning Sarafina! musical and movie, Woza Albert, and Asinamali, were cited as testament to his artistic prowess. He said Sarafina remains Ngema’s Magnum Opus.

Hlomuka decried the prevalence of road accidents robbing society of such influential figures who contribute significantly to social cohesion and the arts.

Hlomuka, who also serves as the province's MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison, lamented the unexpected loss of the 68-year-old Ngema, emphasizing the significant void left in the world of theatre. He urged continued caution on the roads, emphasising the need to respect traffic rules and prioritise rest for drivers.

Reflecting on Ngema's role in enriching humanity, Hlomuka conveyed heartfelt condolences to the late playwright's family, friends, colleagues, and all those touched by his work. Expressing commitment on behalf of the provincial government to enhance road safety, Hlomuka assured ongoing efforts to improve roads as safer spaces for the community calling on drivers to keep their vehicles roadworthy.

Hlomuka concluded by pledging direct engagement with Ngema's family to offer support during this sombre period. Ngema, a former chairperson of the Department's Music House KZN, had a longstanding collaboration with the department, including conducting master classes and participating in projects with The Playhouse Company.
