KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu is saddened and disturbed by the tragic death of five people who were killed following a head-on collision between a bakkie and a truck on the R02 outside Stanger. The five killed include four adults and a 10-year-old child.
Preliminary investigations reveal that one of the vehicles failed to adhere to a stop sign at the Shaka’s Link road before it joins the R102 in Shaka’s Rock. This led to a collision with an oncoming truck. MEC Mchunu noted that the latest road fatalities come at a time when the province was recording a noticeable downward trend in road carnages.
"We are saddened and disturbed at the latest upsurge of road fatalities. This seeks to undermine our efforts to reduce road accidents in the province. We urge all road users to be cautious and ensure they adhere to the road regulations at all times.
This is too many lives lost. We will investigate the full cause of this accident. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," said Mchunu.
