The Gauteng Health MEC, Ms Qedani Mahlangu, has promised to prioritise the upgrade of Mamelodi Hospital; fund vacant posts and improve patient care as a matter of urgency. MEC Mahlangu said this, during her visit to the facility on Wednesday, 21 October 2015. This follows on the Public Protector’s visit to the said hospital on Tuesday, 20 October 2015, where various challenges were raised.
“It must be noted that the hospital was upgraded from a district to a regional hospital, and as such our planning, regrettably did not accommodate adequate human capital equal to the upgrade,” said Mahlangu.
MEC Mahlangu who was accompanied by the acting Head of Department, Dr Richard Lebethe, on the visit, met with hospital management and assured them that a plan to remedy the challenges will be implemented urgently.
Among other necessary interventions in the plan are the following:
- The first priority will be funding of all vacant positions; and appointments henceforth;
- Improve the communication between hospital management, District Cluster and Central Office; and
- Continued development of managers in order to improve patient care.
"Working with relevant stakeholders, we will over a period of two years, complete the process of upgrading this hospital to a fully fledge regional facility and these things will be done immediately in the 2016/2017 financial year," said Mahlangu. On the visit by the Public Protector MEC Mahlangu said: "We appreciate the visit by the Public Protector to Mamelodi Hospital and note issues raise accordingly."
