MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube takes harsh action on convicted Zululand councillor
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has ordered the Zululand District Municipality, to constitute with immediate effect a council committee hearing, into the conduct of one of its councilors, who has been found guilty by the court on charges of theft.
The councilor was sentenced to four years in prison or a fine of R20 000, on the charge of stealing a mobile clinic which belonged to the Zululand District Municipality.
“Councilors as public representatives have the code of conduct which they have to live up to. In light of this damning court judgment, I therefore see it fit that the Municipality should commence with a process which will lead to the establishment of committee that will interrogate this issue so as to ascertain whether this councilor has not violated the code of conduct which all councilors have to observe. The committee should also investigate whether the actions of the councilor has not brought the name and image of the municipality into disrepute. The outcome of this investigation would then decide the appropriate action that the Municipality would need to take,” said Dube-Ncube.
Dube-Ncube believes that the institution of Local government is critical and has to at all times abide by the highest standards of ethical behavior so that our communities can always have faith in it.
“It is therefore important that the Municipality acts swiftly to ensure that it does not suffer further reputational damage as a result of this incident.
