MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube on arrest of traditional leaders

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has reacted with shock to the news of an arrest of two amakhosi (traditional leaders) in the province over the weekend on serious charges which include attempted murder.

The two traditional leaders under arrest include Inkosi Zenzo K Zungu of KwaMadlebe Traditional Council and Inkosi Eric Khoza of uThungulu Traditional Council. The charges include conspiracy to kill and attempted murder. KZN Cogta whose role is to support and oversee traditional institutions in the province is following the case with great interest.

“Our primary concern at this point is about the image of the institution of traditional leadership which our department is doing its utmost best to uphold. These arrests have the potential to tarnish the way the public perceives our traditional leaders,” said Dube-Ncube.

“The law must now take its course and we are confident that it will. We are naturally concerned about the incident and we urge the public to await the outcome of the investigation before jumping to conclusions as they should in every other similar case,” said Dube-Ncube.

Both traditional leaders appeared are appearing at the Empangeni Regional Court today.
