KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has applauded new partnership forged by Durban business community and the police to protect their businesses and customer from criminals.
MEC Mchunu’s comment comes in the wake of an agreement entered into among major retail outlets and banking companies and the provincial police management to partner in the fight against crime.
The agreement is the product of a one day crime summit that took place in Durban this week to trash out joint plans to protect businesses and customers from criminals.
The consolidated crime fighting forum, which includes Business against Crime, the National Prosecuting Authority and the South African Banking Risk Information, seeks to enable all stakeholders to share and update information about crime.
In welcoming this venture, MEC Mchunu said it came at the right time and fitted gloves in hand with his department’s and the Government’s plan to mobilise all sectors of the community against crime.
“We have said time and again that the war against crime and criminality could only be won if all sectors of our society joined a United Front Against Crime.
"We have, and we continue, to set in place community and all sector structures to join hands with the police in the fight against crime. It is only the joint efforts of all stakeholders and sectors that could limit the space for criminals to operate and undermine our democracy," said MEC Mchunu.
MEC Mchunu said the establishment of the forum came and the right time.
"It came at the time when we will soon be officially launching KwaZulu-Natal Safety Month Campaign. The campaign seeks to focus the energy of all sectors of the community on harnessing measures to fight crime and isolate criminals,"said MEC Mchunu.
He urged all sectors of the community to join in this campaign which would be officially launched at Curries Fountain Stadium next Tuesday (November 5, 2013).
