KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu strongly condemns the shooting of the IFP councillor in Escourt yesterday, 16 February 2011 night.
Preliminary reports reveal that Cllr Mtambiseni Duma from Mbabazane Municipality was travelling along the Ntabamhlophe road from Wembezi Township towards Escourt when he was ambushed, shot and killed. It is alleged that several gunshots were fired at him and he died on the scene. A Toyota vehicle was found abandoned opposite the deceased vehicle. A case of murder is registered and is being investigated by HAWKS.
“I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. This is truly an appalling behaviour. I will be holding a meeting soon in the area to address multi-political parties to address these killings and especially that we are heading for the Local government elections and to discuss if these are just criminals trying to hide behind political parties. The Hawks will work tirelessly to make sure that the perpetrators are brought to book” said Mchunu
