MEC Mchunu shocked following an accident that claimed six people on the N2

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr, Willies Mchunu is shocked following the news of an accident which claimed the lives of six people on the N2, at Mkhuze this morning.

Preliminary reports have revealed that at about 8h00 this morning (1 November 2011) a mini bus taxi overturned near Nkonkoni in Mkhuze following a burst tyre.

Six people died instantly and another six are in critical condition. The injured have been taken to Bethesda hospital.

Mchunu expressed shock at the suddenness of the accident after the province had seen an improvement in the number of accidents in the month of October.

“This is such a shock. Again this accident happened on the N2 which we have identified as a red spot. We had a very quite month of October where there were no major accidents. We are however going to deploy the red spot team to monitor the N2, especially between Mpangeni and the Phongolo border.

This accident happens as we are preparing to launch Operation Vali’ ngozi which is a joint partnership with Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union to intensify our road safety campaign. We will continue to campaign for traffic laws to be strengthen. I would like to send my condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the accident and a speedy recovery to those in hospital”, said Mchunu.
