MEC Mchunu shocked and saddened by the horrific act of a cop
killing himself and his two daughters

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu is shocked and saddened by the horrific act of a cop, killing himself, his daughters and leaving his wife and younger daughter fighting for their lives in hospital in the early hours of Sunday, 31 July 2011.

Preliminary reports reveal that Warrant Officer Thulani Makhanya (62) allegedly burnt his house at Newlands East with his wife and three daughters inside. It is alleged that the two daughters aged 23 and 18 were burnt beyond recognition while the wife and the third daughter were burnt so badly that they are fighting for their lives in hospital. It is alleged that Makhanya was found dead in the neighbors’ yard with a stab wound on his neck. A case of two counts of murder and attempted murder has been opened pending investigation.

“I am shocked and saddened about this act. It deeply hurts me, to learn that people who are suppose to protect you, are the ones that may hurt you. Problems are always there within families but there are structures that are put in place to assist families if they have problems. Such acts are unacceptable. I would like to wish Mrs Makhaya and her daughter a speedy recovery,” said Mchunu.
