MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has expressed his concern at the shooting and killing of a taxi operator in Bergville yesterday afternoon (5 March 2013).
Reports reveal that Simangaliso Khumalo (63) was standing with a woman at Zwelisha area in Loskop, when two unknown men opened fire at them. Khumalo died on the scene. The two men fled the scene. A case of murder has been opened and no arrests have been made pending investigation.
Another taxi operator was killed recently in the area and will be buried this weekend.
MEC Mchunu has expressed his concerns on these killings, “Such killings must come to an end. They are so unnecessary and uncalled for. Issues should be discussed and resolved amicably not through violence. The Police and Public Transport Enforcement Unit have been deployed in the area as from today to monitor the situation and ensure stability.
A task team and law enforcement agencies will be intervening in coming up with long-term plan that will decisively deal with the situation. I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” said Mchunu.
