MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison strongly condemns the use of states firearms by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in resolving their personal matters. This is subsequent to the police officer who tried to kill his wife in Ntuzuma G-Section last Friday, 1 July 2011.
Preliminary reports reveal that the police officer had a fight with his wife. It is alleged that she ran away to her mother’s place at Ntuzuma G-Section when he followed her and shot his wife, his mother-in-law and a third person who was also in the house. The three were critically injured and a case of attempted murder has been opened pending further investigation.
“I would like to condemn this appalling act by this police officer. Police officers are given firearms to protect those vulnerable not to shoot at them. State assets should not be used for personal fights and especially firearms. The police will make sure that the culprit will face a full might of law,” said Mchunu.
