KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has described as barbaric the killing of yet another priest in Durban as it comes just weeks after an iLovu priest was gunned down on the church premises.
Mchunu was commenting in the wake of reports that an Umlazi priest, Reverend Agrippa Mtolo (69), was also shot dead early this week while returning from a prayer service.
Reports indicate that Rev Mtolo, of Apostolic Faith Mission in Umlazi, was on his way from a prayer service when he met a group of unknown people who shot him and made away with his purse, but left some of his belongings such as the Bible and cellphone on the crime scene.
He is the second man of cloth to be killed in weeks following the brutal killing of Reverend Agrippa Cibane of the African Gospel at iLovu, south of Durban.
Rev Cibane was shot and killed on Sunday, June 16, 2013, in C section at iLovu, moments before he convened his Sunday service.
Mchunu said the murder of men of cloth was barbaric and reflected the worst decline of morals in the society.
“I am baffled by this act and I wonder what has happened to our moral values. This murder should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. But I am convinced that our police will work around the clock to hunt the killers and bring them to book,” said Mchunu, urging anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of killers of Rev Mtolo to hand it over to the police.”
Mchunu also extended his condolences to the family of Rev Mtolo and members of this church.
