KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has commended the swift and decisive work done by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Special Operations Unit, which impounded 51 mini-bus taxis during their normal routine operations.
A total of 40 vehicles were charged, 22 suspended and 29 screened on the mobile brake testing machine in the Isiphingo/ Umlazi area during the operation. These vehicles were suspended from operating and impounded by the Unit for numerous offences varying from defective brakes, faulty lights, oil leaks, poor body works and many others.
Part of Operation Valingozi and ahead of the Durban July horse-racing spectacle scheduled for next weekend, RTI has escalated its operations following MEC Mchunu’s call to remove un-roadworthy vehicles from the provincial roads to reduce fatalities.
“RTI will be intensifying its operations to remove un-roadworthy vehicles throughout the year. We urge motorists and passengers alike to desist from using un-roadworthy vehicles to ensure the safety of everyone,” said Mchunu.
