Brits Hospital delivers conjoined twins successfully
In line with the MEC of Health, Dr Magome Masike’s philosophy of ‘If you do good, you feel good,’ The Brits District Hospital management is proud to announce to the citizens of Bokone Bophirima (North West Province) the birth of conjoined twins in the early hours of Tuesday the 29th September 2015 at the hospital’s theatre.
“The worth-mentioning action, which deserves full marks to the multi-disciplinary team that ensured that our beautiful conjoined twins make it on earth alive, is indeed a good story to tell about the hospital ‘s efforts in treating lives of our patients,” expressed the CEO of the Hospital Ms Babe Mosuwe during the staff ‘golden hour’ briefing session.
According to research, approximately 40 to 60 percent of conjoined twins often die during delivery. The incidence is estimated to range from 1 in 49 000 births to 1 in 189 000 births. According to World Health Organization the conjoined incidence is one into 2000 live births.
In reacting to the news, Health MEC in the Province Dr Magome Masike said, "the province is consistently looking to implement strategies to curb infant, child and maternal mortality. This latest case affirms our commitment to delivery healthy babies in our facilities".
The twins are joined on the abdomen however at this stage the medical team is still investigating what these twins share and not.
Moreover the Hospital Rapid Response team has managed to connect with Doctors at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. In the same vein the twins were and successfully transferred them to the same hospital for a higher level of care.
Stakeholders will be updated by the developments and management has called for officials to refrain from taking photos of the twins until the matter has received a relevant district and provincial higher echelon management attention as well as briefing the family concerned.
“We need to treat this matter with a high level of care and confidentiality especially by not taking photos and distributing them as part of our hospital’s values of respecting our patients’ privacy,” The CEO said
"I congratulate theBrits District Hospital employees, the CEO, the management, clinical staff and everybody at this facility for successfully delivering these babies. Previously we experienced this kind specialists services only at Klerksdorp Tshepong Hospital which is our tartiary health institution in the Province. We did however made a commitment that once we are happy that our methods are working in Klerksdorp, they will be cascaded to all parts of the Province", said MEC Dr Masike.
