MEC Madoda Sambatha praises team that successfully delivered Advanced Abdominal Pregnancy in Christiana Hospital

History has been made! The North West Province is proud of yet another historical success. This time a level 1 hospital in Christiana has successfully delivered an advanced abdominal pregnancy. Under normal circumstances, the baby was supposed to have been in the womb but this time the baby was in the abdomen which made it a very rare and complicated procedure.

This is the first case of its kind in the institution and Province. It is also possibly about the 6th recorded such delivery in South Africa.

The team performed a successful caesarean section on a patient who was intra-operatively discovered to be having an Advanced Abdominal Pregnancy. A baby of 3,24 kg was delivered.

All intra-operative complications were successfully managed by the team involved, which included 4 doctors and 4 nurses. The mother and baby are well and recovering.

North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha has commended the team that performed the successful Caesarian section and delivered a healthy baby. “Congratulations to our team for this great success. This is testimony to what we already know, the fact that our Province has the best skill to perform complicated cases”, said MEC Sambatha

In recent years, the Province has advanced in specialized clinical services. Among others the Province became the first ever to cure MDR TB and performed the first ever heart operation in the Province in 2016.

“These breakthroughs in specialized services means that we are no longer forced to continuously send patients to Gauteng as we can now perform majority of those services in our Province”, said MEC Sambatha.

MEC Sambatha said what is pleasing even more is seeing such specialized services and skill being now devolved to rural and farming areas.  Christiana is an agricultural town of about 3000 inhabitants on the banks of the Vaal River in North West province, South Africa The town is located on the N12 national route between Bloemhof and Warrenton, on the way to Kimberley. It is the administrative centre of Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipality.
