MEC Ina Cronje on first day of school in 2014

The re-opening of schools at uMgungundlovu District was all systems go - KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Ina Cronje

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Finance, Ina Cronje who is also the Champion MEC for uMgungudlovu District, says it was all systems go at the schools re-opening in uMgungundlovu District today.

MEC Cronje visited three schools in the district as part of the KZN Legislature School Functionality Monitoring Programme and said that teaching and learning commenced on the first hour of the first day, as all material had been delivered to schools already.

All MECs were out all over the province leading teams in their districts where they are deployed as champion MECs accompanied by members of parliament and senior government officials to oversee the smooth sailing of entry into the new term and to assess schools readiness for the new school year.

MEC Cronje visited Nkabini Primary, Zamelizwe Primary, and Sobantu High schools where he spent some time engaging with school management teams and school governing body.

“We have seen really well functioning schools and it was encouraging to see teaching and learning commencing on the very first hour of the school. We spent a lot of quality time at each school engaging school management teams and school governing bodies, really asking probing questions.

I must say there are some very exciting developments for instance the issue of text books and stationary delivery seems to be a problem of the past. We had no complains about that. Of course there are some infrastructure problems that we need to follow up on. But all in all our kids are off to a very good start” said Cronje.

The Sobantu High grade 11 learner, Sindi Mabizela, said “it was such a wonderful day at school today. It was amazing to come back to school to find teachers ready to start teaching on our first day. We received our books and stationary then teaching and learning started right away, and we even made new friends”.

This Monitoring programme continues tomorrow.
