This year’s glorious Umkhosi Womhlanga ended tragically when a bus carrying maidens lost control resulting in a horrific accident that claimed the lives of ten occupants. The MEC for Education and Acting Premier, Senzo Mchunu has expressed shock at the news.
"We wish to send our condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to all those fighting for their lives in different hospitals. Such occurrences are a reminder to all of us to always thank our creator for his grace to us. We are informed that some of those involved were learners from different schools. May their souls rest rest in peace."
Those killed included seven maidens, two minders, a bus driver and scores of others. Some seriously injured are reported to be in critical condition in hospitals. The accident took place at Enkwalini near Eshowe yesterday. According to reports, those involved were travelling home to Emahlongwa on the South Coast after celebrating the annual Umkhosi Womhlanga Enyokeni, Kwanongoma.
