DARD fuses the new Agrarian Reform and Transformation strategy with the poultry sector in Pietermaritzburg
MEC for KZN Agriculture and Rural Development Mr Cyril Xaba, visited the KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute in Pietermaritzburg, where he addressed the poultry sector from the entrant farmers to the commercial farmers about the growth possibilities the Departmental strategy on Agrarian Reform and Transformation has for the sector.
MEC Xaba said “A united, sustainable and vibrant agricultural sector with thriving rural communities in balance with nature is the new vision of the department which I want to see the poultry farming sector in line with. We have to strengthen the support of poultry farmers at a local and a district level” he said.
The department is undertaking a cooperative arrangement with the KZNPI for specialist poultry training to the department’s Extension Officers, Animal health Technicians and students from the departments colleges. This will be one of the building blocks of the new Agrarian Reform and Transformation strategy as extension services will be more scientific and technologically developed to withstand farming challenges at ground level.
MEC Xaba alluded to the fact that chicken remains South Africa’s food of choice and an affordable source of protein, therefore this market is ready to be exploited and grown exponentially.
