MEC condemns killings in Greytown and calls for calm in the area

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele strongly condemns the recent spate of violence in Greytown that has the community ravaged by fear.

However, swift action by the police in the area resulted in the arrest of two suspects who were questioned regarding the murders of three members of the Sikhakhane family on Tuesday (23 June 2009).

The police are confident that the questioning of the two suspects will yield positive results as they could be directly linked to the murders. The MEC has asked for calm in the area and would like to urge community members to come forward with whatever information might help the police to put an end to the senseless killings in Greytown.

This area, especially Entembisweni, has been plagued by politically motivated killings since May, with both the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the African National Congress (ANC) having lost their councillors as a result of this violence. Government and the police are closely monitoring the situation in the area, and would like to assure the community
that it is their priority to restore peace and stability in Greytown.

“We as government would like to stress that political intolerance will not be tolerated; we have come a long way in our democracy. It is time our people learnt to accept and respect each others political affiliations. It is our main priority to stem out any acts of violence in the province, and we will pursue all the available avenues to find the perpetrators of these acts of violence and we will deal with them accordingly,” said Cele.
