The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, has strongly condemned the despicable acts of disturbing normal taxi operations by the KZN Taxi Alliance and Qina Mshayeli, which left commuters stranded in Durban yesterday.
Reports reveal that the taxi operators were meeting at Curries Fountain to address taxi industry challenges. Some taxi operators continued with their business while others were in the meeting, which occasioned the violent acts of intimidation and disorder that broke out and adversely affected commuters who had to find alternative transport.
“I am appalled at this undesirable behaviour by some of the taxi operators, who are not taking their business seriously and disregard their customers, the commuters. The department has met with Qina Mshayeli to process their issues and the EThekwini Municipality is embarking on the same process subsequent to their protest march last month. I would like to appeal to the taxi operators to allow these processes to reach their logical conclusion, and to always seek to advance industry peace, stability and growth,” said Mchunu.
A case of public violence has been opened but no arrests have been made pending investigation by the police.
