Mchunu welcomes police task team to investigate serial rapist in Thongathi following the death of five women

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the establishment of the task team to investigate and arrest a suspect in connection with the murder and rape of five women who were found dumped in a sugar-cane field in uThongathi three months ago.

Today, KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner of Police, Mammonye Ngobeni, announced that she has assembled a task team to probe and bring to book suspects involved in this tragic incident.

Three months ago five women were killed and found in a sugar-cane field in uThongathi, north of Durban. Their bodies were in a terrible state of decomposition. Their underwear was lying alongside and not far from their bodies. Also, three weeks ago, two women's bodies were found in more or less the same condition, prompting fears that a serial rapist-cum-serial killer was active in the area.

Now police, who believe they have an idea who the suspect is and are working around the clock to arrest him.Mchunu, who believes that the police will soon bring him to book, has welcomed Lt Ngobeni’s move to deploy a task team to investigate and arrest the alleged suspect.

“I support and welcome the Commissioner's initiative. We are sure that since the suspect is known, he will be brought to book soon. I wish to thank the community for playing a big role in identifying the suspect.”

“We have said once and again that communities and police, working together, will soon close the space for those harassing the community. With this kind of partnership, I am convinced that criminals will have no space to hide and to continue meting out their nefarious deeds,” said Mchunu.
