Mchunu welcomes the bold step by Thokozani community to oppose the bail application by the taxi driver

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu welcomes and support the planned picket outside Pietermaritzburg court by the community of Thokozani under uMshwathi Municipality.

Thokozani community has indicated their intention to come out in numbers to oppose the bail application for a taxi driver that killed 15 people in Corpsville, outside Pietermaritzburg on 30 September 2011.

The taxi driver is facing 15 counts of murder and has been in custody since the accident happened.

Tuesday (15/11/11) the court is expected to rule on whether or not he will be granted bail.

Ten people who died were from Thokozani location.

The picket will be led by bereaved families, community leaders, community road safety structures and religious leaders together with the Department of Transport.
Mchunu said this picket is in line with his department’s theme for this year: Activism against road carnages and transgressions.

The Department of Transport is going to join the Thokozani community as part of the Provincial Road Safety Summit resolution, which mandated the Department to mobilize for harsher sentences against killings of innocent people on the road.

“We welcome and support this initiative by the Thokozani community. This will send a strong message to all those who disregard our traffic law. It is now clear that our communities are fed-up of these senseless killings on the road. This bold step by the Thokozani community is an indication that our communities are taking road safety matter as the priority. This partnership will also advance our newly launch Operation Vali’ ngozi where we seek to revive morals of people to speak to their consciences and stop killing people on our roads,” said Mchunu.
