KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu strongly condemns defrauding of the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and has vowed that tough actions be taken against those responsible.
The RAF is solely aimed at assisting families of road accident victims and survivors of road accidents.,
Mchunu also noted with disappointment the arrest of Nalini Atwaru who is a Lawyer for allegedly defrauding the Road Accident Fund with some of her relatives.
On Friday she appeared at Commercial court and was given a bail of R5 000.
In 2010 the Department of Transport together with the RAF started road shows to interact with communities on matters relating to their claims on the Road Accident Fund.
In many cases vulnerable rural communities are blaming bogus lawyers for not getting their compensations.
Mchunu said it is unforgivable that people wants to accumulate wealth and fraud the state at an expense of the poor. He declared to leave no stone unturned and to get to the heart of the matter.
“We will work hard to find fraudsters of the RAF. Already government is spending more than R56 billion per annum compensating road accident victims. It is concerning that people who are in the forefront of defrauding the RAF are lawyers claiming to act on behalf of victims. The recent arrests should serve as a warning to all those involved in these shenanigans. As government together with RAF, we will continue to work hard in exposing all those criminals defrauding the fund,” said Mchunu.
