Mchunu shocked at the spate of accidents in KZN

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu has expressed shock at the recent spate of road accidents that has gripped KZN recently.

It is alleged that today (31 July 2012) at about 14h30 a driver of a taxi carrying nine passengers, lost control and his vehicle over turned. Three people died on scene and one other died on the way to hospital. The remaining passengers were taken to the unit 10 Clinic in Inanda. Police are still investigating the cause around the accident. Four counts of culpable homicide were open.

In a separate accident on the N3 North bound, Key Ridge, seven trucks, three bakkies and two light motor vehicles collided. Two people were critically injured and five sustained minor injuries. This caused major havoc in the early hours of the day and congestion along the N3.

Mchunu re-iterated government's commitment of working tirelessly in reducing road carnages.
"I am deeply disturbed that we continue to lose innocent lives on our roads. The recent spate of accidents is a cause for concern. We however want to make a strong appeal to all motorists to adhere to the rule of law. We have also issued a clear directive to all our traffic officers to be visible and to deal harshly with any one transgressing on the road. Lawlessness can not be tolerated. I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families of the victims in the Dude Village accident and a speedy recovery to those in hospital," said Mchunu.
