Mchunu sends condolences to a bride family killed on the N2 accident

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu sends his condolences to the family of Miss Sindisiwe Sabelo who died after shopping for her wedding on the N2 yesterday.

According to the police report, a Toyota Condor lost control when travelling on the N2 near Prospecton at iSiphingo. Three people died on the scene and two died in hospital. The groom survived. All deceased are believed to be related to the bride and the groom.

Mchunu also welcomes the arrest of the driver who has been charged for driving without a driver's licence. The driver who is due to appear at the Durban magistrate court tomorrow is facing 5 cases culpable homicide, reckless and negligence driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a driving licence.

Mchunu expressed concern at an increasing number of fatalities of KZN roads saying extra-ordinary majors are needed to put an end to the scourge. "I wish to send my condolences to the Sabelo family and to all those who lost their loved ones. This accident happened when we were at uMzimkhulu attending a funeral of 13 people who died in a road accident. This shows that something has gone wrong in our society.

"It is for this reason we are calling on strengthening our laws to deal harshly with road offenders. It is unacceptable that the driver was driving without a driving licence. We are hoping that the justice system will give him harsh lessons. We appeal to people to respect the law,' said Mchunu.

Acting HOD for the Department of Transport, Mr Sbusiso Gumbi on behalf of Mchunu, will
tomorrow visit the Sabelo family (will advice on relevant details).
