Mchunu saddened as cop dies on way to work

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has expressed his condolences to the family of 38 year old Constable Nombulelo Precious Shelembe after her tragic death when two taxis hit her and her 38 year old colleague, Constable Ntokozo Mqadi, on Tuesday, 5 July 2011 along the M4 Inkosi Albert Luthuli Highway.

Preliminary reports reveal that the two were on their way to work when they saw an accident along the M4 in Durban and intervened by helping with the flow of traffic. It is alleged that Mqadi was knocked by another taxi after trying to assist Shelembe after she was knocked down and killed by another taxi. Mqadi is in a critical condition in hospital.

“This brings a mixture of emotions because it gives me great pride to know that we still have police officers who go over and above the call of duty to assist the community, because they were on their way to work when this happened. On the other hand it saddens me to know that we have lost such a dedicated officer. I would also like to send my condolences to the family of Constable Shelembe and wish Constable Mqadi a speedy recovery,” said Mchunu.
