KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu learnt with shock the tragic death of South Africa’s top cyclist, Burry Stander.
Stander (25) was killed yesterday while cycling on the South Coast, Port Shepstone in the corner of Marine drive and Stott Street.
According to the report, the cyclist collided with a minibus taxi at around 16h50 yesterday (3 January 2013). Stander died on the scene and the driver of the minibus taxi has been charged with a case of culpable homicide.
Mchunu expressed concern over the loss of such a talented young South African who was determined to grow to greatest height with his career. Stander has been described as one of the world’s top cyclist who represented South Africa at the London Olympic Games.
Mchunu described his loss as a tragedy to the nation.
“We lost one of the most talented young stars. This again is evidence that road accidents are depriving this nation people with skills and expertise to take this country to another level. Road accidents are now the worst killer in our society.
Stander was indeed an inspiration to other young cyclists. I am concern with the high levels of accidents involving cyclists and it’s high time we all work together and pay attention to this matter. Together we must provide tangible answers to end this scourge. I would like to send our condolences to the Stander family,” said Mchunu.
