MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu yesterday committed the provincial government in reducing fatalities and transgressions. Mchunu made this commitment yesterday after meeting with the families of five people who died in a gruesome accident in Babanango after attending uMembeso of a relative in Ladysmith.
The accident happened in Babanango on the R618 when the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a Toyota Quantum. Four people died instantly while the other died in hospital.
“We have spoken tirelessly to the drivers to practice diligence on the road. There is a difference when an accident happens at a speed of 120 km compared to when the driver travels at 260 km, thus keeping to the regulated speed limit is a must.
Drivers should be cautious when driving at all times and obey the rules of the road. We as the department will offer our assistance with the funeral arrangements and work with the families of the bereaved in their moments of grief. The department will further assist the bereaved families with matters relating to the Road Accident Fund. Such is done to restore the dignity of the deceased and their families,” said Mchunu.
