Mchunu: 'I should have been convicted-Weekend Witness', Saturday, 22 May 2010

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is calling for a full investigation on the assertion made by Mr Bradley Lloyd on his acquittal after being charged with drunken driving. This comes after Lloyd’s bragging to the public about how he escaped a hefty fine because of what he called incompetence of traffic officers as he was acquitted by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate court on 14 May 2010 due to lack of evidence.

Mchunu said the Department of Transport respects the decision of the court but he wants the matter to be urgently reviewed. Admission of guilt calls for necessary lawful steps to be taken against the person admitting.

“This department will continue with its endeavours of screening and testing drivers for drunken and driving using the state of the art South African Breweries (SAB) alcohol evident centres. I can assure motorists that they will be caught and prosecuted in accordance to their culpabilities if they break the rules of the road,” warned Mchunu.
