KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has vowed to end feud between the Piesang Taxi Association and Ntuzuma A&B taxi association.
The two associations are in confrontation following a dispute over route operation.
Today (13 February 2013) Mchunu addressed the community of Lindelani and committed to call an urgent meeting to resolve this matter in the interest of the commuters.
A team from the department early this week met with the Greater Durban Region in a bid to resolve this conflict.
The meeting was made aware of the existing agreement between the warring associations.
The meeting agreed that Piesang must go back to the original agreement and are not going to be allowed to rank where the dispute erupted.
Last week Thursday (7 February 2013) operations were disrupted when two groups were fighting and intimidated commuters and blocking any moving traffic in the area.
“I am optimistic that we will find a solution into this matter. Violence and intimidation in the taxi industry must be history. I have assigned a team to deal with this matter and we are confident that after this intervention there will be stability. However, I want to appeal to the taxi industry that the only way to resolve conflicts is not in battlefields but through peaceful negotiations. To satisfy myself, I will personally meet with the association to ensure long lasting peace and stability,” said Mchunu.
