MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu strongly condemns the throwing of rocks on the road as it endangers the lives of motorists and other road users.
It is alleged that in November 2010, three youngsters threw concrete slabs from the Candella Road Bridge onto the N3 freeway.
Mchunu described those who are practicing this as people who have lost human respect and values. He said this must come to an end.
Mchunu’s comment is subsequent to the court appearance of three teenage boys for allegedly throwing a concrete slab on the N3 freeway.
The three teenagers are on trial for the murder of Siphesihle Zuma who was a passenger in a vehicle when they threw the concrete slab.
Mchunu issued a stern warning to all those throwing rocks on the road and vowed that harsh action must be taken against them. “This trial is very important as we are awaiting the outcomes with a keen interest. The fact that the three boys are on trail must serve as a lesson to all those who are throwing objects on the road. We condemn throwing of rocks on the road because it leads to unnecessary loss of life. We are working very hard with municipalities to put mechanisms and systems to monitor our highways,” said Mchunu.
