Mchunu condemns the killing of yet another taxi operator in Folweni

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has condemned in the highest degree the killing of yet another taxi operator in Folweni.

It is alleged that Philakufanele Langa was gunned down by two unknown men who allegedly followed him whilst in his vehicle. It is said Langa had survived numerous attempts of death and had escaped. Langa was shot and killed on Wednesday, 3 April 2013 at Prospecton, eSpingo whilst going to his home.

Mchunu expressed bitterly at how disappointed he was of the death of this operator as the department had made numerous attempts to bring peace and resolve disputes prevailing in the Folweni association.

“I would like to send my deepest condolences to the Langa family. I am deeply disappointed at the death of Langa. As a department we had talks with the Folweni association to discuss ways of resolving the ongoing taxi dispute. It is alarming that people would rather resort to violence rather than resolve issues amicably. It is senseless that people would rather resort to violence rather than resolve issues amicably.

This incident is a total disregard of our collective intensive efforts with the taxi industry of eradicating violence that has tainted this industry. At this point it is not clear whether this dispute is related to the ongoing taxi dispute in the area. I am confident that the police will work tirelessly to find perpetrators of this ugly deed. We therefore appeal to the community to come forward with any information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects,” said Mchunu.
