Mchunu commends the red spot response team impact against transgressors on KwaZulu-Natal roads

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is convinced that transgressors on the road are feeling the heat with the Red Spot Response team on their toes.

The newly launched unit is to focus on hazardous spots in the province has now opted for a military style of camping and operating 24 hours.

The Red Spot Response team launched this unprecedented approach two weeks ago in Kokstad where more than 2 000 vehicles were stopped and checked.

The whole of last week, the team was camping and conducting operations in the Mpangeni vicinity and Zululand.

Focus was at:

  • Empangeni
  • Jozini
  • Pongola
  • Nongoma
  • Hlabisa
  • Mtubatuba
  • Melmoth
  • Ulundi

The team stopped a total of 1 664 cars and booked a total of 899 charges. 173 vehicle licences were suspended and a total number of two vehicles were impounded.

Mchunu applauded the team for the good work and urged them to continue in monitoring the hazardous areas.

“I would like to applaud the Red Spot Response Team for the good work. I would like to remind motorist that this team will be out in full force to monitor the situation and help in fighting road carnages and transgressions during the festive season and beyond. Part of our newly launched campaign operation Vali’ngozi, is to ensure a maximum enforcement on the road day in and night. We are determined to reduce high number of fatalities in the province.

As we approach the festive season I warn motorists entering and exiting the province to obey the rules of the road because our police officers will be there to monitor them. I want to also warn motorist that anyone caught contravening the rules will be dealt with harshly,” said Mchunu.
