Mchunu appeals to motorists to be cautious following the death of six people on the N2

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu strongly appeals to motorists to adhere to the rule of law following the unprecedented deaths on the provincial roads recently.

Mchunu’s comments come after the accident on the N2, eZinqoleni on the South Coast where a bakkie lost control, overturned and killed 6 people.

According to the report, a bakkie was travelling from Durban to uMthatha and lost control at around 23h30, last night.

Four people died on the scene and two later died in hospital. Seven injuries are still hospitalised.

This accident happens as the province was mourning the death of more than 20 people who died last weekend on various accidents, including the R61 accident which killed 6 people in St Michaels.

Mchunu expressed shock at the escalation levels of fatalities on the provincial roads and called for caution and the respect for the rule of law.

It is unbelievable that we losing so many people on provincial roads. Many of these accidents are caused by reckless drivers who disregard the rule of law.

I condemn those drivers as this is having a serious impact in various families and to the image of the province. The accidents we are witnessing these days are unacceptable.

The tragic death of six people this weekend must be a wake up call to road users. I appeal to all motorists to respect the rule of law. Let us all work together in saving lives of innocent people on the road. I wish to send my deepest condolences to the families of six people who died on the N2,” said Mchunu.
