Mchunu appeals for for calm and political tolerance at Umlazu Unit 17 Hostel

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu has appealed for calm and political tolerance at the uMlazi Unit-17 hostel following the killing of NFP member Mthunzi Gwala.

Reports reveal that Gwala was shot and killed on the 14th July 2012 at his house in Unit-17 hostel.
Police are investigating a case of murder and Mchunu is optimistic that perpetrators will soon be brought to book. This hostel was identified by the multi-political party committee as a hot-spot building up to 2011 local government elections.

Interventions and efforts have been made by this committee which comprises of all political party leaders in the province and chaired by Mchunu. Mchunu assured the people of uMlazi that police will leave no stone unturned and urged them not to resort to violence.

"It is disappointing that our province is still witnessing killings of political party members. Whether this is politically motivated or not it does cause instability in our society. I appeal for calm and tolerance in the area of Unit-17. We will revisit the peace process that we had started between political parties within this hostel.

"We appeal to all political party leaders to preach the gospel of peace. We will work tirelessly to make KwaZulu-Natal a province of free political activities and respect for the rule of law. The police are also working hard to ensure that they investigate and leave no stone unturned to find the perpetrators," said Mchunu.
