As thousands of Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) trainee candidates await their fate, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has announced major changes to the recruitment process. Mchunu revealed today, 7January 2013 that his department is going to review the recruitment process of trainee traffic officers.
Mchunu made this announcement after meeting the management team responsible for the recruitment process. The management team presented to the MEC a new plan which will see candidates going for further tests in their nearest central testing stations thus dividing them into smaller groups.
This will reduce waiting hours and will ensure efficiency in the recruitment system. The review of the recruitment strategy comes after the tragic death of eight candidates after participating in the fitness test. Mchunu suspended the recruitment process following this tragedy and after visiting two driving evaluation stations in Pietermaritzburg.
Mchunu has now received the report detailing all what happened during the fitness test. He is today expected to discuss the report with the Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize. He appealed for calm and patience to those candidates waiting to proceed to the next step of the recruitment process.
“We now have a new plan which is going to assist us manage the process much better moving forward. Candidates must be patient as we are preparing for this new approach to the recruitment of trainee traffic officers. In a space of two weeks we will inform all candidates on where there will be conducting the next tests. Only those who passed the fitness test will be considered,” said Mchunu.
Mchunu also expressed appreciation to those who supported the families of the deceased during the funerals this past weekend. “Your support is very important and it made a difference to these families. All the deceased were buried this weekend and we thank the families for working with the department. This is a difficult time to all of us and we are all mourning this tragedy. May the souls of all those who passed on rest in peace,” said Mchunu.
