Mchunu angered by cruelty against senior citizens

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu is furious at incidents of rape of senior citizens. Mchunu described the two incidents of rape of two senior citizens in KwaSwayimane as barbaric and a clear loss of ubuntu.

It is alleged that on Saturday (28 July 2012) an 84 year old senior citizen was raped at her home at oDlameni in KwaSwayimane. This is the second incident to happen in the area in a period of two weeks. In a separate incident another 94 year old senior citizen was raped in the same area.
No arrests have been made for the recent incident and the police are hunting for the suspect on the second incident.

Mchunu welcomed the swift reaction from police by apprehending a suspect who allegedly raped a 94 year old senior citizen. Mchunu also expressed concern on the escalation of crime targeting senior citizens "I am deeply angered by these criminals targeting senior citizens. As government we value our elders but the recent incident displays a loss of ubuntu. As government we are committed to protect our senior citizens. We appeal to the communities to report incidents of this nature and work with the police in finding perpetrators," said Mchunu.

In an attempt to address the escalation of incidents of this nature, Mchunu has sent a delegation to engage and galvanise the community of KwaSwayimane to rise up and ensure that incidents of such nature do not happen again. This delegation will tomorrow convene a stakeholders meeting at Thusi's Community Hall in KwaSwayimane.
