KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu and members of the provincial executive council are in UGu District Municipality as part of Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) Cabinet Day. They have visited War Rooms to assess the impact of government programs and to ensure the participation of ordinary members of society in the improvement of service delivery.
Operation Sukuma Sakhe has ensured the integration and joint delivery of departmental programs and services in War Rooms across the province.
“All MECs including myself as the Premier have been assigned to act as champions of service delivery in various district municipalities across the province under Operation Sukuma Sakhe campaign. We are giving you as ordinary members of society the opportunity to monitor the speed in the delivery of such services. We want you to be part of all efforts aimed at finding solutions to local challenges.”
“As a democratic government, we are here to account to you because you exercised your democratic right of electing your own representatives. We understand that our failure to account to you will manifest itself into service delivery protests.”
“The Operation Sukuma Sakhe Cabinet Day is a democratic tool we have created to ensure that we are not remote from communities who elected us. Importantly, we do not want you as members of communities to be disconnected from the processes that of speeding up the delivery of basic services to you.”
“OSS is aimed at ensuring that the government of the day becomes more relevant to people and that all institutions of states are able to address the need of various communities. All Heads of Departments and senior government officials must always report about service delivery in various war rooms across the district. You must hold them accountable for the lack of service delivery because this is your government.”
“Given the fact that non-participatory governance was the order of the day under the apartheid system, it is important that the practice of community participation is promoted. Community participation creates an environment of hope amongst all our people that their lives will get better. As far as government is concerned, a generation of hope and confidence amongst all of our people will help build a prosperous and brighter future.”
