The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nomusa Dube–Ncube, has lavished praise on the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality for its record high revenue collection rate for 2013/14, which has put every other metro in the country to shame.
“This extraordinary achievement did not fall from heaven. It is the result of hard work in ensuring that the eThekwini Metro’s revenue collection systems and credit controls are and remain firmly in place,” said KZN MEC for COGTA.
KZN COGTA has consistently placed a premium on revenue collection as a means of funding service delivery at local government level in addition to the funding municipalities receive for their operations and special projects from the National Treasury.
“The revenue collection rate of 105 percent by the eThekwini Metro shows that our municipalities can beat public expectations and the negativity that is often piled on their financial management and performance by the media,” said Dube-Ncube.
KZN COGTA has for many years urged municipalities to improve their revenue collection strategies and, in many instances, it has also provided ample and hands-on support to every municipality in the province that has required it.
“The immediate task before our country’s most successful metro is now to return the favour by ensuring that its ratepayers get value for their money by expediting service delivery - from timely refuse collection to repairs of faulty infrastructure and potholes,” said Dube-Ncube.
