The KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet has ordered the re-activation of the multi-party task team to help calm down political tension in the Umsinga area following the murder of National Freedom Party (NFP) members early in the month.
Organiser Bongani Shelembe and constituency chairperson and youth secretary Zamo Zondi were on their way home from a party meeting in northern KwaZulu-Natal when they were ambushed and killed by four people. Another member, Thulephi Mbatha, was seriously injured and admitted to hospital.
Briefing Cabinet in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu said no arrests had been made. It is alleged that there is on-going conflict among NFP councilors in the area.
Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize said: "We want the multi-party team to come in and play a role to calm down the situation before it gets out of hand. KwaZulu-Natal has been through a very painful period of political violence and we don't intend to return there. We also urge the police to bring the culprits to book speedily to help restore normality."
MEC Mchunu, who is also Leader of Government Business in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and deputy chairman of the African National Congress in the province, will lead the team which includes leaders from the various political parties in KwaZulu-Natal.
