EThekwini Municipality Team continued their dominance in the traditional sport by winning the seventh Provincial Indigenous Games at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Port Shepstone at the week-end. The only Metro among 10 districts, eThekwini had been reigning champions for quite some time. Again they scooped most first place positions in the different traditional games being revived by the government.
In congratulating eThekwini, the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Weziwe Thusi said as government they were very excited with the revived popularity and interest in this once almost extinct form of sport.
She said the games had been part of “Many of us as young people, across all cultural groups”. The current list of the games comprise of khokho, dibeke (formerly shumpu), amagenda (stone games), umlabalaba (board games), ingqathu (rope skipping), Induku (stick fighting), jukskei, drie stokkies, incuva and arigogo.
The tournament culminated in the selection of the KwaZulu-Natal Indigenous Games Team to participate in the National Indigenous Games in Pretoria next month. Those selected will be contacted via their districts.
Mrs Thusi announced that next year’s Provincial Indigenous Games will be hosted by Ilembe District.
