KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu encouraged by arrests this festive season

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu says the crime prevention plans that were presented during the sitting of the provincial cabinet by the National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega two weeks ago are already bearing fruits. The Premier was speaking following the release of figures by the South African Police Service (SAPS) today.

According to the SAPS, since last week, about 1863 people have been arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder and rape, business robbery, house robbery, hijacking, theft of motor vehicles, assault, kidnapping, fraud, stock theft, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of drugs.

“At the time we promised to allocate more resources to assist the National Police Commissioner ensure an effective implementation of the national crime prevention strategy which she presented during the sitting of the provincial cabinet."

“Importantly, we said in order to make an impact, we will align our own provincial crime strategy to the national strategy. The figures of arrests that have been released by police today are a clear indication of our successes in the fight against crime."

“We are a province that is intolerant of any form of crime and we call upon civil society and communities at large to work with police to turn the situation around. Government will continue to allocate resources to support community crime prevention associations, street crime committees and neighbourhood watch groups in order to make it impossible for criminals to operate this festive season.”
