KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu has learnt with shock the death of four farm workers in a gruesome accident in Appelsbosch, outside Tongaat this morning.
Preliminary reports indicate that a truck lost control and allegedly ran over four pedestrians. It emerged that the four deceased were farm workers who were on their way to work. The incident took place today (21 February 2013) in the early hours of the morning, on the intersection of D1621 and R614. Further investigation is being conducted.
Mchunu expressed his shock at the escalation of road accidents in the province.
“I was shocked to learn of a terrible accident this morning. The death of farm workers is a serious loss to the nation. The Department is in the process of instituting a formal investigation. I appeal to motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before they embark on a trip.
The death of pedestrians is a serious concerned which need to be given much attention. The department is now strengthening pedestrian safety campaigns to address this scourge. I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families who lost their relatives,” said Mchunu.
