KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu shocked at the senseless killing of six family members in Muden

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is outraged at the mass killing of six members of one family in the early hours of this morning in Muden, outside Greytown.

Mchunu learnt with shock the news of this merciless incident and described it as cruel and unacceptable. According to the police report, six members of the Mkhize family were gunned down at around 2h30 today, 9 March 2013.

It is alleged that five assailants entered their homestead and acted as police officers.
Three other members of the family sustained gun wounds and were rushed to the hospital.
At this stage, the motive of the killing is not clear however MEC Mchunu is confident that police will work around the clock, looking for suspects.

Mchunu condemns this senseless killing and appeals for calm in the community. “I strongly condemn this callous killing. It is unacceptable that six members of one family can be killed at once. I am however fully confident that the police will work very hard to make an early breakthrough in this case. I appeal for calm and stability in the area as police have stepped in to investigate this incident. I urge people to cooperate with the police and give them information but not to take law into their own hands,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu has also indicated that he has assigned a team of senior officials from the Department of Community Safety and Liaison to go the area to establish further details and circumstances surrounding this incident.

Mchunu expressed concerns that such incident of mass killing has happened as he was planning to visit Pomoroy next week. The MEC’s visit was to ascertain progress and further interventions after seven members of Isikebhe were ambushed in Mahlaba last year. “It is shocking and unfortunate that once again, in this district we are experiencing bloodshed. This is painting a negative picture about this area and its people.

“Working together with various role players, the police and the community, we must find long lasting solutions to ensure stability and peaceful co-existence in this area. As government we have put in place number of community structures to strengthen community participation in the fight against crime and we encourage people to use these structures,” said Mchunu.
